Life Lessons and Hattie Smith Lindsley are excited to announce Forces, an exhibition in which artists Scott Ferguson and Lili Jamail invite you to look at bodies—of water, of land, of people—in remarkably sublime and lonely surroundings.

Ferguson and Jamail each have a unique interest in photographing spaces in nature, where the texture is a stinging focal point. Each has selected a collection of five photographs that showcase the cyclical movement between the environment and human lives, from locations ranging from Texas to Iceland and beyond. In shots of complete stillness or caught mid-action, they capture specific moments of nature and its mimesis that demonstrate the cycle of life.

Their photographs are meditations on the common kinetic energy between touched and untouched landscapes, between the wave of a hand and a sheep in a standoff with the viewer. Each work shares an element of potential, a present force.

Scott Ferguson (b. 1989, Glasgow, Scotland) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. His work discusses our current relationships to technology and media through the deconstruction and re-fabrication of instruments, television, sound and objects. Since 2012, he has been an active member of the Flinching Eye Collective whose work explores the possibilities of sound and performance.

Born in Houston, TX, Lili Jamail is a photographer based in Texas and New York. Jamail’s work highlights tensions of life, death, and the idea of using moments of honesty and vulnerability to shed light on past and current perspective. Lili is currently working on her thesis as an MFA Candidate at Hunter College in New York City.

Native Texan, Hattie Smith Lindsley curates in order to track the evolutionary form of art in the Austin community. Hattie started curating in Austin in 2016 at the Austin Bouldering Project and now also manages OLA Gallery, a 1200 sf space within the Office for Local Architecture.
